Exposure Therapy for OCD

People often think that OCD treatment is...you got it fully...or you're failing. I often like to think of it like Karate. I am however a black belt myself. No seriously. Years and Years of practice led me to achieve something grand. I didn't gain it the first day, first year, or even second year. It took time and I'm going to be honest with you. I hated most of it.

Weird right? Shouldn't you love the thing you're devoting time to? Well, not always. I knew I wanted this sense of achievement and my parents forced me into it. But at the end of the day...I don't regret it one bit.

This of this like treatment and the belt leveling up system. As we go through these belts, let me know in the comments what belt you think you are.

White Belt: The beginner's stage
Just as a karate student starts their journey with a white belt, someone with OCD may initially experience mild symptoms or have a few intrusive thoughts. At this stage, the person might not fully understand what is happening or the impact it may have on their life.

Yellow Belt: Recognizing the patterns
As the karate student progresses to a yellow belt, they start learning basic techniques and become more aware of their body movements. Similarly, individuals with OCD begin to recognize recurring patterns in their thoughts and behaviors. They may start noticing the presence of obsessions and compulsions, and their impact on daily life. This is the task I typically give the first session with someone.

Orange Belt: Building understanding and skills
The orange belt stage in karate signifies the student's progress in developing a stronger foundation of techniques. In the context of OCD, individuals start seeking information and gaining a deeper understanding of their condition. They may start researching what tools work for OCD and probably have discovered ERP, but are a little apprehensive.

Green Belt: Expanding coping mechanisms
A green belt in karate represents further progress and the acquisition of more complex skills. In the OCD analogy, individuals with the disorder might explore and employ a variety of coping mechanisms to manage their symptoms. This could involve cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP) techniques, medication, or other strategies recommended by mental health professionals. There are ups and downs, treatment is tough and they find themselves not fully committing just yet.

Blue Belt: Challenging the mind and body
Moving to a blue belt level in karate often involves facing more difficult opponents and refining existing techniques. Similarly, individuals with OCD may face greater challenges as their symptoms persist or intensify. They may encounter triggers or situations that are particularly challenging, requiring them to use their coping skills and techniques to overcome them. They may learn that starting treatment may make their symptoms worse at the beginning. They feel like quitting, but are still ready for the fight. They are doing exposures here and there.

Brown Belt: Mastering the art
In karate, a brown belt indicates a high level of mastery and skill. Similarly, at this stage of the OCD analogy, individuals with OCD have gained significant insight into their condition and have developed effective strategies to manage their symptoms. They have honed their treatment skills, improved their resilience, and gained more control over their obsessions and compulsions by making treatment a big part of their life.

Black belt in OCD karate

Black Belt: Achieving resilience and self-mastery
The black belt represents the pinnacle of achievement in karate. It signifies not only technical skill but also discipline, resilience, and self-mastery. In the context of OCD, reaching the "black belt" stage means that individuals have gained significant control over their symptoms and have learned to live a fulfilling life despite the presence of OCD. While OCD might still be a part of their experience, they have developed the ability to manage and minimize its impact on their daily functioning. A black belt doesn't mean an individual will always stay at this level. It takes persistence and a lifestyle. Just like someone going to the gym to gain muscle. They don't achieve their goal and stop.

In this black belt status, individuals are not allowing ANYTHING to get in their way. They are living life the way they want to.

That's the point of all of this. You must evaluate where you are and see how you can improve. Your life is worth the fight. Keep on going and I'll be with you.

I want you to reach that black belt status through my step by step Master your OCD course, which I'll link down in the description.
