Interview with CG5: How OCD Has Shaped His Life and Career
Introduction
I recently had the pleasure of sitting down with CG5, an artist known for his inspiring music and, surprisingly, his openness about living with OCD. When I discovered he had written a song about OCD, I was intrigued to learn more. Mental health, especially OCD, is often misunderstood, so I invited CG5 to discuss his experiences and insights. In this interview, he openly shared his journey with OCD, how it has impacted his personal life and career, and the transformative power of effective treatment.
When Did You First Notice Symptoms of OCD?
CG5 began by explaining how OCD is commonly associated with specific behaviors, like hand-washing, but the reality is much broader and more complex. He described how OCD can disrupt your values, making you doubt deeply personal aspects of your life, from relationships to career choices.
He first noticed symptoms during a pivotal period in his life, a time when he was navigating both personal growth and the pressures to "do everything right." As many with OCD can relate, these intrusive thoughts and doubts crept in, affecting relationships and creating constant uncertainty.
Navigating Relationship OCD
One particularly challenging theme for CG5 has been relationship OCD, which involves excessive doubts and fears about one's romantic relationship. Unlike common relationship concerns, CG5 noticed that OCD amplified these worries to the point of obsession, making it hard to distinguish between normal insecurities and those caused by OCD.
“It’s hard when everyone else has relationship questions, and I’m left wondering if mine are 'normal' doubts or something more,” he shared.
The Role of Exposure Therapy in Treatment
As a therapist, I often talk to my clients about the importance of exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy for OCD. Unlike traditional therapy that focuses on the root of the problem, ERP teaches people to confront their fears and tolerate the uncertainty rather than trying to resolve it.
CG5 shared how ERP played a significant role in his journey, enabling him to face discomfort head-on rather than endlessly trying to "solve" his worries.
“Instead of trying to figure out if this relationship is 'right' for me, ERP taught me to accept uncertainty and live according to my values,” he explained.
This shift in approach helped CG5 reclaim parts of his life previously dominated by doubt and anxiety.
Overcoming OCD: Embracing Uncertainty
Learning to embrace uncertainty was a game-changer for CG5. He pointed out how crucial it is for people with OCD to avoid engaging in compulsions, which only worsen the problem by reinforcing the need for certainty. Instead, by embracing a mindset of "maybe, maybe not," he was able to stop trying to control every outcome and instead focus on his values.
“When my brain tells me there’s risk or something to worry about, I remind myself that I don’t need to figure it all out. I just need to keep moving forward.”
Does OCD Influence Your Music?
As a creator, CG5 explained that OCD has, in many ways, fueled his creative expression. From navigating themes of doubt to exploring the emotional intensity of living with OCD, he’s channeled these experiences into his music.
One of his songs, "OCD," reflects the isolating and often overwhelming nature of the disorder. CG5 noted that the symbolism in the music video, where his face remains blurred until the end, represents feeling lost in obsessive thinking. But there’s a shift at the end—a moment of clarity—as his face is revealed.
“It’s a reminder that, even in those dark moments, we can still find clarity and connection. That’s the power of facing your fears,” he said.
Physical Symptoms of OCD
Many people associate OCD solely with mental symptoms, but as CG5 shared, the physical impact can be equally challenging. OCD often brings intense physical sensations, like a burning feeling in the chest or stomach, which can make intrusive thoughts feel even more real and convincing.
“The brain tricks you into thinking, ‘If I feel this strongly, it must be true,’” CG5 explained. Recognizing this physical component of OCD has helped him understand his symptoms better and avoid being misled by those intense physical sensations.
Advice for Others Facing OCD
To anyone struggling with OCD, CG5 offers this advice: stick with the treatment, even when it feels uncomfortable. ERP and other OCD treatments require a commitment to facing fears, resisting compulsions, and accepting the inevitable uncertainty of life.
“Don’t give up. There are so many resources and so much information available. Just keep learning and keep going,” he encouraged.
For those aspiring to build careers, pursue creative passions, or build relationships, CG5 emphasized the importance of resilience and patience. OCD doesn’t have to stop you from achieving your dreams; it’s about learning to work alongside it.
Final Thoughts
In our conversation, CG5 underscored that while OCD can be challenging, the right treatment can empower individuals to live fulfilling lives. His openness about living with OCD and his encouragement to embrace uncertainty offer hope to anyone dealing with similar struggles.
“You can still live a full life—pursue a career, find love, and chase your dreams. OCD doesn’t have to hold you back,” he affirmed.
Thank you, CG5, for sharing your story and reminding us all that, with the right mindset and support, we can rise above our challenges.
