New idea for OCD treatment
Feb 21, 2024Today, we're diving into an idea that's so powerful, it can blow OCD out of the water. This Epiphany hit me a while back, and I knew I needed to share it with you. But before we jump in, I want you to picture something.
Life is a series of decisions, big and small. Now, imagine each decision is like a stone you throw into a pond. The ripples from those decisions spread out, affecting the surface of your life. Some ripples create beautiful patterns, while others create chaos.
Now, think about someone making choices right now that can either create a serene pond or a turbulent sea in their future. It's all about the mindset – the lens through which you view and navigate life.
So, let me share a story that illustrates this mindset in action. Meet Sarah, a young professional facing the challenges of work and personal life. She had a choice – to let OCD control her decisions or to adopt a mindset that would empower her. Sarah started viewing decisions as opportunities rather than burdens. She embraced a mindset that focused on growth, resilience, and positivity. It was like giving OCD a one-way ticket out of her life.
What is this mindset you may ask. Well I'm glad you asked. Here it is.
The OCD treatment mindset
I want you to imagine yourself in the future. What does your future self look like without OCD? What decisions would you be making because OCD is not running the show. Are you not washing your hands often, are you not asking reassurance questions, are you not actively engaging in rumination. Are you just living your life the way you want to live it.
Probably.
So this is what I want you to ask yourself. Every time you're about to do a compulsion, say, does my future self do this? If my goal is to no longer given to OCD in the future, I can't continue to do this behavior now.
Really you envisioning yourself without these OCD behaviors. What would things look like if you didn't have OCD? You might take out a piece of paper and write down all the things you wouldn't be doing if you didn't have OCD. That is what you're aiming for and the decisions you have now are going to affect those towards the future.
If you really think about it, this is the case for most things in life. We have a goal in mind what we want something to look like towards the future. We can't just wait for it to happen magically, we have to take a little steps here and there to achieve the goal.
This is how it works.
Imagine your goal to stop biting your nails as planting a tiny seed in the soil of your life. Each day, as you resist the urge to bite, it's like watering that seed. Now, if you're patient and committed, that seed will grow into a strong, beautiful tree.
But here's the catch – if you keep biting, it's like constantly uprooting that seed just as it starts to sprout. You're preventing the progress, the growth, and the transformation that could have been. It's like expecting a flourishing garden while repeatedly digging up the seeds you've planted.
So, stopping now isn't just about the present moment; it's an investment in the future you want to cultivate. Allow that tiny seed of progress to take root, and soon enough, you'll witness the blossoming of healthier, stronger, and more beautiful nails – a testament to the patience and dedication you had in nurturing that small but significant change.
But it's also not an all or nothing thing. If you resist compulsions for months, and then given to some, you're not starting back from square one. So give yourself some grace
I know treatment is not easy, the OCD treatment is to stop compulsions, change your mindset, essentially just live the life you want to live. This causes anxiety and doubt and questioning and fear but that's OK.
Just planting the seed, you're not gonna see it right away, you will see progress over time and be amazed by all the things you can do. So remember this mindset, is my future self doing this compulsion. It's all about your future self.
Here's also something interesting to think about, think about whatever your fear is, if your future self is not doing the compulsion, why are they not in jail, why are they not sick, why has the catastrophe not happened to them?
This shows is pretty darn quick, that OCD loves to throw in some lies.
