EASY way to think about treatment for OCD
Apr 03, 2024OCD treatment tips
I'm here to help you. Save a lot of time in your OCD treatment. It's a concept that works well for some and is extremely hard to do but I wanna make sure you have this in your back pocket.
The typical way we do OCD treatment is the exposure and response prevention. We might track symptoms for a while, create an exposure, hierarchy, where we are ranking the highest fears to the lowest fears. We're doing it. We're facing these fears. We are risking that the threat that you have in your brain is incorrect. We're also accepting the complete uncertainty that maybe we've been wrong this whole time but you know you just wanna live life.
Here's the downfall that I see in some peoples treatment with OCD. We can get so caught up in what's the next exposure, am I doing it? Well, enough, do I really have to face this thing or not, I have 100 things on my hierarchy how will I ever recover.
Here is really what it's all about. The secret sauce as I call it a way to think about exposures in a whole new way without actually even having to think about them. Am I keeping you in suspense? Well, good, because you made it…. good job for waiting.
The whole goal of treatment is for you to live your life exactly how you want to live your life. So here's what you do. You live your life exactly how you want to live your life, Right now. And I mean it right now. I wanna wash my hands one time I'm gonna do it. If I wanna watch the movie that triggers me, I'm gonna do it, if I want to go to church even if I get triggered, I'm going to do it. I want to go talk to that cute girl over there, I'm gonna do it.
If you're not sure what your life is going to look like in the future, you may take out a piece of paper and write this all out. What does life look like without OCD? This is exactly what you wanna start acting like right now. Why wait? There isn't a magical date where you can start living the life you wanna live.
What does end up doing is allowing you to do exposure and response prevention natrually. Because what you're doing are exposures. You're facing your triggers by living the life you wanna live. You're doing the things you wanna do. Even if you're not sure if it's right or wrong for you right now. You're going to feel anxious and feel like something and feel like you're doing it wrong.
Because you've been living with OCD rules for so long sometimes it's hard to tell what is what some people call “normal” And what is not?
As I said in the beginning, This is not an easy task. But I have seen people do this. They completely surrender and say I no longer I'm going to act like I care and I'm going to do exactly what I want to do. What ends up happening is that the fears start slowing down, the compulsion starts slowing down And they realize that life is amazing.
I know we don't live in a black or white world, but this is one of those things some people try using black-and-white with. I am completely giving up all compulsions because my future self is not doing these things. I'm living my future self life right now.
Ohhhh, This can be painful, but it is an easy way to think about what exposure to do next. Because what to do next is…. what do I want to do in life.
